It’s all about the socks once again

Hi there, how are you doing today? Fine I hope. For once it is a sunny day here in Normandy. We had begun thinking that spring was not actually going to come this summer but today it’s really sunny and nice so we are crossing our fingers the nice weather is here to stay.

Now I haven’t finished telling you all about my last travel and the yarn shops I visited. There is one shop left on my list, Yarn Cake in Glasgow Scotland and I’ll be telling you all about that one next week if all goes to plan. Today I thought I should tell you about my latest sock knitting as that is mostly what I’m knitting on these days.

A while back I told you that I had joined Sock Madness for the second time and that this time I was way to enthusiastic (fast) knitting on my qualifying socks and so was put into the fastest team! And boy are those ladies fast!

So as of round 2 I got disqualified. Not only because of speed but because I misunderstood the colorwork chart. I finished my socks in time and got the confirmation email that I was qualified for round 3 and then the next day I got a second email saying that I had misunderstood and thus knit the pattern wrong and so I was disqualified. Re-knitting both socks was not an option as my teammates are so quick so I forfeited. What a deception! I was so very sad and just generally angry with myself for being so stupid and actually knitting two whole socks without realizing my error! But what is done is done and colorwork (this year’s theme) is not my forté. So now I’m a cheerleader and as such I’m knitting the patterns along with my teammates but I no longer have the stress of finishing in the blink of an eye. I admit I was so disappointed at first that I thought about just forgetting all about Sock Madness but I got a lot of heartwarming encouragements from fellow knitters and so decided I had to keep going and I’m really happy I did.

So here is a picture of the pair that got me disqualified.

sock madness round 2

Instead of the pattern repeat being always the same like I did, it should have been like a mirror image. You may have seen pictures of these knit the correct way and they do look nicer than mine. Another issue I had with these, as these are stranded throughout, even though I used a bigger needle than the pattern called for, they still came out small and rather stiff. I clearly need to work on my tension when doing all over colorwork.

Then there was round 3 and I finished that pair within the 2 week period (most of my teammates finished in 2-4 days I think). I’m very happy with the end result and the colors I had chosen for this pattern. I was very careful this time around about my tension. I did use a bigger needle for the sock and the tension was much better this time.

Currently we are on round 4 and this time it’s not a colorwork pattern but a beaded sock. I really love this one and so far I have only done one repeat on sock one but I’m hoping I’ll be able to finish again within the two weeks. As a cheerleader I also have the luxury of not exactly following the pattern and I took advantage of that and instead of using two colors of beads as the pattern calls for, I’m only using one and I really like how that looks.

I’m knitting with my SPARKLES yarn and I really love how it is knitting up.

I have also subscribed to the New York Sock Club that Mina Philipp of the Knitting Expat is doing and she issues a pattern a month and so far I have kept up with those. Here is the pair from April, The Grand Central socks and I knit those using sock yarn from Knit Cosmic String in their Chai latte colorway.

I have only just cast on for the May sock, Union Square socks, and I’m knitting those in a self striping yarn from the Yarn Enabler.

I’m also doing a sock test knit for Dana Gervais and I really love this new pattern. I’m knitting it on my SPARKLES base and it is gorgeous even if I say so myself. The pattern has not been released yet but I’ll be sure to post pictures on IG when it is.

I was somewhat naughty and bought a ton of commercial sock yarn some time ago and when it arrived last week I of course had to cast on for a pair immediately. I cast on using a new to me yarn. It’s a cotton sock yarn from Regia and I knit a pair of shorty socks for my youngest. The pattern was just something I came up with and I really love the outcome and as spring and summer is getting closer I have this urge to knit shorty socks so I think you will be seeing more of those here.

IMG_7857

She doesn’t like her socks very short so I knit a longer cuff than I had expected but that’s ok. She has the option of rolling it down as I show on the second sock.

Phew that’s a lot of sock knitting! I was intending on finishing my Ramble shawl by Andrea Mowry before the Starting Point mystery kal by Joji begins this Friday. Only problem was that as I had put the shawl down for a while, once I picked it up again I was just off and yesterday I ended up ripping back the brioche section. I had done just over one repeat so quite a lot but it just didn’t look like it should and I would never have worn it like that so I decided to rip back and begin on the brioche section later. Maybe not until the Starting Point is over but at least then it will be done correctly.

I hope you have enjoyed spending some time with me today and sharing my sock knitting. Are you also avid sock knitters or do you mostly knit something else like garments? Would you be interested in us doing a kal this summer? Maybe something from June 1st to September 1st? With a prize or two in the end? Please let me know by leaving a comment below and also let me know what you would like that kal to be about. I have ideas such as : 1) socks  (of course) 2) a shawl -either we all knit the same or we just each knit our own 3) a garment 4) or we can decide on a designer and just knit any pattern by that particular designer

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Also I almost forgot, My -20% off everything sale is still going until May 15th so if you would like to try out my yarn for the first time or maybe get some more if you already enjoy my yarns, now’s the time! Just use the coupon code MADMAY17 at checkout and you will get a 20% discount on all in stock items. I of course ship worldwide at low prices so I hope you will take advantage of this offer. The shop you can find by clicking here

Until next time I wish you a wonderful week and hopefully lots of quality knitting time. Speak to you soon 🙂

May is a month for DISCOUNTS

Hi there, how are you today? I hope you are doing good and that you have enjoyed my very active blog lately. I have enjoyed sharing so much with you and I still have a list of topics I need to share and more are being added every day. However time can be an issue so I’m probably going to go back to posting once or twice a week as before and hope that will be fine by you 🙂

As you may have guessed by today’s title, this is a blog post about good deals and knitting! So as I was browsing Ravelry this past weekend I came upon something called Mad May. I found this in the Madelinetosh Yarn Ravelry group so I’m guessing they are the instigators. Mad May is a time when indie designers and makers offer special discounts and some go up to 50% off! So just in case you are not aware of this, do click over here to check it out.

yarn 1

One of these makers is yours truly! I’m offering -20% off all in stock items in my shop, Knitting in France, until May 15th with the coupon code MADMAY17. So if you are interested in trying out some of my yarns now’s the time to do so at a special discount!

I also wanted to mention one of the designers participating in MAD MAY, Elena Nodel. She is currently battling cancer and as a means to try to collect funds for her treatment, she is offering 50% off all her patterns until May 5th. I was aware of her designs although I think I have never knit any of them. I went ahead to her pattern store on Ravelry and purchased 3 of her designs and maybe you would like to take a look and get a great pattern at a big discount while also supporting an indie designer through a tough time. Just click here to go over to her Ravelry page.

I did not only buy patterns from Elena Nodel but also from a few others. I think my Ravelry library has taken on epic proportions in the last couple of years as I’m constantly buying patterns and planning on knitting a million things and then never getting to do everything because I just can’t find the time! If only my job involved a lot of knitting and yarn fondling! Yeah, that does sound like a dream! I will need to do some research 🙂

One of the patterns I’m planning on knitting this month is the Joji Mystery wrap. I have chosen my yarns (the ones in the picture above). I’m going to use my Back to Basics yarn because I think it is just fabulous for knitting shawls and garments. it’s non superwash so it does not stretch out much and it just feels so soft and has a wonderful stitch definition. I can’t wait for the pattern to come out. But first I do have to finish the shawl that I’m test knitting as well as the Ramble shawl by Andrea Mowry.IMG_7609

This shawl has been on hold for a few weeks now and I really need to get back on it.

I only have one finished object to share today and that is a pair of socks that I test knit for Dana Gervais. This was a fun pattern as always and I used yarn from Knit Cosmic Strings in their Sea Urchin colorway. This pattern has not yet been published on Ravelry but I believe it will be this month.

I loved knitting the asymmetrical cable pattern. It’s an easy pattern repeat and soon becomes memorized more or less. The pattern is called Mitochondrial Socks. As soon as I finished this pair I started another test knit for her. I’m just at the beginning but this time I’m using my own yarn in my SPARKLES base and I really love the pattern. My yarn is also working up beautifully in the stitch pattern. Here’s where I’m at now.

That’s all for today. Thank you for stopping by and spending some time with me today.  Don’t forget to check out this month’s Maker of the Month and participate in the giveaway.   A winner will be drawn this Friday, May 5th.

Until next time, have a great day and enjoy your crafting 🙂

A special holiday offer from designer Nancy Whitman

Hi there, I recently had the pleasure of discovering knitting designer Nancy Whitman on Ravelry. I learned about her in a knitting group I’m part of on Facebook and she posted a generous offer in the group and said it could be shared so I decided I had to share with you!

Nancy has 23 patterns on Ravelry and her special gift to us is 1 free pattern of our choice from her pattern store on Ravelry. You choose the pattern you like the most and upon checkout use the code: HH15 and that will make the pattern FREE of charge!

When I saw this offer I immediately went to Ravelry to check her out and since she has such lovely patterns I was simply unable to choose just one so I decided that I would get my free pattern and then purchase 2 more and so I did. I chose all shawl patterns and all three finally have something in common as you’ll see.

I just loved the construction of these shawls and the colors and I feel they are just different from the shawl designs we usually see so I’m really looking forward to knitting these. I don’t know which one I’ll knit first also I need to check my stash for good color combos or simply dye something up just for each shawl. I’ll see and keep you posted once I get to this.

So I hope you will check out her Ravelry store and enjoy her generous offer of a free pattern. Her offer and coupon code are valid until the end of day December 23rd so you have a few days ahead of you to make up your mind.

That’s all for today. I wish you a nice weekend and hopefully you’ll get some quiet time to knit even though this is the last weekend before Christmas. I will not get much knitting time as we will be spending the weekend with family but I’ll knit some in the car on our way back and forth.

Take care and happy knitting until next time 🙂

A weekend of discounted shopping

Hi there, at last it is Friday! Youpi! If you are in the USA you are probably on vacation as it is Thanksgiving but for those of us living elsewhere there is no holiday so we are just thankful that the weekend is almost here!

So yes this is a weekend of good buys everywhere! And I want to be part of the fun so I’m offering -20% off all my in stock items as of now and until midnight Sunday 29th of November in my Etsy shop. Just use the coupon code BLACK20 upon check out.

And today, Friday 27th of November is the last day of the Indie Designer Giftalong 2015 on Ravelry so you should definitely check out the patterns there if you haven’t done so yet. I bought a ton of patterns the first day and since then I must admit that I have been back a few times and even as I’m writing this, I have a few more patterns in my cart that I’m going to purchase before the end.

So you could buy a few gorgeous patterns on a discount today and then buy the yarn/stitch markers/needles you need to make those, from my shop this weekend:)

I have finished one of my Giftalong projects- the Fernie hat by Kate Bostwick. I used a worsted weight yarn from Eden Cottage Yarns.

I really love the hat and I think I might do another one for myself.

I’m going to cast on for a few more Giftalong patterns in the coming weeks such as more hats, mittens, socks and at least one shawl.

Today’s post is short but sweet. I just wanted to remind you of the Giftalong coming to an end if you haven’t had the time to check it out yet and also let you know about my special offers in the shop this week if you want to try out my yarns or other items I offer in the shop.

Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you make lots of good shopping deals (if that is on your program). Take care and enjoy your weekend:)

Hi there, just a quick note to let you know that I’m back from a wonderful family vacation in Sicily! I’ll have to tell you all about that when I have a little more time. I feel I have a billion things to share with you only the return after being away from work, shop and home for 2 weeks is super hectic!

It was extremely hot and humid in Sicily so knitting was not always easy but I did knit! I had brought a hand spindle and some roving for spinning but it was just too hot for me to actually do spinning so unfortunately I did not do any spinning.

If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen pictures every now and then of me and my knitting at the beach! Such as these

www.knittinginfrance.com  Here I’m working on a new sock pattern. I’ll be sharing some more pictures with you later of that

www.knittinginfrance.com and here I’m knitting on my Mara Light shawl

I’ll need to free up some writing time this week to tell you about my vacation and my knits on the needles as well as some exciting news about the shop and future pattern support for my yarns:) Yeah! I’m super excited about all that:)

Also,  my HUGE DISCOUNT offer is still going for a few more days! So if you would like to try out some of my hand dyed and or hand spun yarns NOW is the time! I also have lots of stitch markers, knitting needle holders as well as knitting needles and crochet hooks. And the best part is that you can have them all at a 40% OFF! So just place an order before the end of August 22nd for 10€ and more and use the discount code: RENEWAL upon check out! I hope you have or will be able to enjoy this offer, do share with your fellow crafters and on social media. The more sales I get, the better I’ll be able to make my “new” shop! After August 22nd I’ll be closing the shop for about 2 weeks as I reorganize and set everything up. I’m super excited about this renewed shop so I cross my fingers and hope for the best:) So for the shopping, this is where the magic happens- just click here . That’s all for today. Take care and enjoy your crafting until next time

Holiday knitting – that is the BIG question!!

Hi there, I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. Personally I wish the weather here in Normandy was better and that I had more vacation!!!! However there is light at the end of the tunnel and in just a few days I’ll finally have my summer vacation!!! Can’t wait!!

So now my big dilemma is what should I knit during the vacation??????? I have to have 2 projects. Not too voluminous as I will travel some but not too small either as the fear of finding myself out of knitting would just be overwhelming. So I’m thinking maybe a shawl and a pair of socks. What do you think? Do you bring knitting/crochet on your vacation? How do you choose your projects? Would you like to share your choice/s for this summer?

Now for the shawls I might have 3 choices. I say “might” because I actually bought some yarn online – 2 were kits that included a downloadable pattern + yarn. The third I had already bought the pattern and then later bought the right yarn and that one has arrived.

So what could definitely be a contender is the Bagatelle Shawl by Rachel Brown of Porpoise Fur. This cowl was designed as part of the Boardwalk collection from Kettle Yarn Co. I actually saw the cowl “in person” at the I Knit Fandango in London last May. My stand was opposite Linda’s of Kettle Yarn Co and my friend and I immediately fell in love with the pattern so as soon as it was released I went online and purchased it! And just last week I finally got around to ordering the same exact yarn and same exact color as the sample was made with! Now I’m sure you’re curious so here goes:

www.knittinginfrance.com You should definitely check out the pattern on Ravelry (I included a link up there). It really is gorgeous and Kettle Yarn Co’s yarn is simply gorgeous!! So I’m really looking forward to getting started on that. And I would also encourage you to check out the entire Boardwalk Collection that Kettle Yarn Co just released. It includes 6 gorgeous patterns all knit with her beautiful yarns, all designed by women, photographed by a woman, modelled by women etc! So a wonderful enterprise and 6 wonderful patterns. Just click on the name a few lines up and it will take you to the collection:)

Now on to my second contender and this one I have the pattern which I downloaded from Craftsy which is also where I bought the kit. The pattern is called Drachenfels and is by Mairlynd and here is a link for more info on that. I chose the colorway shown on the picture below and that is called Fire. The yarn is Brown Sheep Company. So I’m really looking forward to actually receiving the yarn and cross my fingers and hope it will get here in time!!!

www.knittinginfrance.com

And the last contender is also a kit I bought from Craftsy and same thing here, I have the pattern but not the yarn! This one is called The Mara Shawl Light kit.www.knittinginfrance.com The pattern is by Amy Hendrix and the yarn I chose is Madelinetosh Merino Light in Cosmic Wonder Dust ( love the name) and that is actually the colorway you see in the picture above.

So all gorgeous patterns with beautiful yarns!!!!

Now for the socks! Should I take some yarn and try to design a new pair? Should I pick one of the billion sock patterns I have in my Ravelry Library? Or should I just choose something completely soothing and just let the yarn do the job – here I’m thinking of doing a 2 in 1 socks using one of my Lorna’s Laces hand dyed sock yarns I recently indulged in. ??? Lots of questions here and I’m going to have to decide as I always cast on and do a few rows BEFORE leaving on vacation! A habit of mine, don’t know why but I just need to do this! Maybe to be 100% sure that I’ve chosen THE right project for my holiday knitting!

And on the question of sock knitting, as I’m working on my current pair of 2 in 1 socks which I think I just might call “Siamese socks” as of now, I’m thinking that this could actually be THE most soothing knitting I ever do. I just love the rythm to this and even though I’m basically “just” producing vanilla socks, the fact that I knit them simultaneously and that one is inside the other, one is entirely purled and the other knit, there is just something about that which keeps the interest going and at the same time gives you this soothing, relaxing feeling. So I’m actually rather leaning towards that. I’d love to be able to make up a new pattern using that technique, same basis but just do something with the stitch pattern for example. So I just might but I’m not sure. After all vacations are made for relaxing so I might end up just doing a regular 2 in 1. Here’s  a picture of my current pair of Siamese socks. I’m knitting them in Lorna’s Laces Shepherd sock in Rainbow

www.knittinginfrance.com

I think this is about it for tonight. I’d love to hear your take on holiday knitting so do join in the discussion and share your thoughts on the matter:) Also don’t forget that I’m doing a huge RENEWAL sale in my Etsy shop as I’m hoping to carry out a number of significant changes this autumn.

That’s all so until next time, take care and enjoy your crafting time:)

My first ever sock design 90% done and a great response to my HUGE discount on Etsy

Hi there, two great news today that I’d like to share with you! First off, my first ever very own sock design is 90% done! I’ve knit both socks and the written pattern + chart is almost done. I just need to take some good pictures and include in the written pattern and then I’ll be ready to send it off to a couple of test knitters. I’ve shared pictures of the design both here and on my other social media and I’ve had an incredibly positive feedback so I’m actually feeling super happy and optimistic about this new pattern of mine. This will be a free pattern that will be released here on the blog end of August beginning of September I hope. Coinciding with the “NEW” shop opening.

I called upon your help a few days ago regarding this pattern because I didn’t have a name for it. I did get a few suggestions here and one on Facebook but I was already in love with the first one. So the suggested names were: Coral Reef, Waterfall, Soft Waves and Can Can. Thank you to all of you who took the time to give this a thought and come up with a suggestion.

And I’ve decided to go with Coral Reef! I just love the name, it flows well and somehow just fits perfectly so a huge thank you to my blog reader Maggienesium who came up with this name:)

I would also like to thank everyone for the success of my huge discount in my Etsy shop now. Like I shared with you in my last post I’m working on a complete “renewal” of my Etsy shop this autumn but to be able to do that I need some help in the form of orders! I need to sell off as much of my current stock as possible to be able to make room for the new stock and I also need some money to buy new base yarns and to launch an independent e-commerce website so that I won’t be so dependent on Etsy anymore. So far I’ve had a great response to the offer. People are buying knitting needles and yarns at -40% off and I’m so excited that this benefits us all: I get more room in my stock space and some much needed funds to carry on and you/the shoppers get a great deal on all the supplies I carry so basically this is a win win situation!

So I hope this coming week will continue to be a success sale wise and if you are part of a knitting/crochet group online or “in the real world” do share the news with your fellow crafters:)

So just in case you didn’t read my latest post, the coupon code to get the 40% off your order ( valid for all orders of 10€ and more) is: RENEWAL

Happy shopping 🙂

ps- here in Normandy it is the perfect online shopping weather today. It’s raining like there’s no tomorrow! Also the perfect weather for some serious tv knitting and I think I may just get started on sock design nr2 🙂

Take care and enjoy your Sunday:)

New beginnings and a huge discount in the Knitting in France Etsy shop

hi there, yesterday I said there would be some big news announced today and here I am!

As I’ve told you before, I really want to give it my all in order to keep my little yarn business alive. I’ve decided to change my focus a bit and make changes in the shop. I’m going to concentrate more on fingering weight yarns and leave out the heavier weights. I’m going to choose just 2-4 base yarns to work with rather than offer a large selection of different type yarns. I’m also going to be doing some designing myself and approaching knitwear designers and offer them yarn support in exchange for them designing patterns using my yarns. Pattern support, I believe, can be a very important element when trying to build a sustainable yarn related business. I’m also looking into having my own independent e commerce website, like I had at the very beginning 4 years ago.

So lots of changes and I’m feeling inspired and excited at the prospects of making these changes and possibly seeing my shop grow. But changes cost money! And more yarns not only cost money but they also require physical space in my stock room so to be able to launch these changes I need to sell as much as I can of what I currently have in stock and to do so I’ve decided to go big and offer a 40% discount off all in stock items in the shop (I will not be adding any new items until the end of August) –  be it knitting needles, accessories or yarns. The discount is valid as of now for all orders of 10€ and more. Just use the following coupon code upon checkout: RENEWAL and just in case you haven’t been to my shop yet, it’s called Knitting in France and you can find it at www.knittinginfrance.etsy.com

I thought the coupon code name was appropriate for the situation:) So, I do hope you will take a look and why not, share the discount info and code with your fibre craft friends on your social media, the more the merrier! The more I sell, the better the future shop will be!

The discount will be valid until August 22nd so you have plenty of time to check out the shop and enjoy this huge discount. I’ll probably be losing money on some of the items on sale but it’s for a good cause so to the heck with it. I need to reduce my current stock to a minimum to start afresh this autumn with an even better shop.

So thank you for coming by today and thank you in advance to those of you who accept to share my offer on your own social media sites and blogs. Your support is vital to me! So a big hug to you all and I wish you a wonderful weekend full of quality crafting time and why not, some good, quality shopping at super low prices:) The magic happens here

Happy mail day

Hi there, yesterday was a happy mail day for me! As you know I’ve been going a bit overboard with project bags lately and seeing as I have a collaboration going with Silvia of FridaJo on Etsy I had to buy some more of her bags! So I had been looking at these 2 for a while and last week I just could not wait any longer and today I have them in my hands! And I got a bonus bag! Silvia generously gifted me with a little bag that I think will fit perfectly for sock knitting or maybe hexapuffs.

www.knittinginfrance.com So the bambi and red bags on either sides are those that I had been eyeing for a while and the one in the middle is my gift! And she even added a little owl charm to the tie! So beautiful! And once again, beautiful workmanship and super cute patterns. I’m a big fan. I also know that she is now working on knitting needle cases for her shop and I saw a picture of one for interchangeable needles on Facebook so you should definitely keep an eye out for those.

Also if you haven’t taken advantage of our special offer collaboration yet, remember that this is valid until June 30th. How does it work? You have 2 possibilities:

1) Place an order in my shop and you will get a discount code to use in her shop.  If you buy Fridajo bags for 25 Eur or more you get 10% off and if you buy bags for 35 Eur or more you get 15% off. Isn’t that nice?

2) Make a purchase at FridaJo and you will get a discount code to use in my shop (Knittinginfrance) If you purchase for 20Eur or more you get 10% off and if you purchase for 40Eur or more you get 20% off.

So I hope you will be able to take advantage of one or both of these offers this June and that way you too will have a great happy mail day too:)

That’s all for today. I hope you have a wonderful day and do tune in tomorrow because I have a little game/giveaway planned for you:)
