Branching out on social media

Hi there, it’s been a very busy week and not a lot of blogging or preparation for the show has been done. This weekend will have to be well used as the I Knit Fandango show is practically around the corner so I have to finish my sock knitting kits and my kits for the Marin shawl by Ysolda Teague. I’m also going to prepare kits for a crochet shawl –  a design by a young French designer. The pattern is called Muscari by Mam’zell Flo. I’m excited about this new crochet kit which will be my first crochet kit and also the first kit including a pattern by a French designer. So lots of work for me and I hope that next time I come back to post I will be able to share some success stories and pictures with you here of my finished/prepared kits and yarns.

Now the title of todays post is “branching out on social media”, we all enjoy and use social media up to a certain extent, some use it more than others. I began using Facebook and it was really the only social media I used for my business. Then I went on to Twitter but that is something I have not really used to its full potential so that is something I need to look into. I also created an account on instagram and Flickr but have more or less abandoned those unfortunately.

Today I mostly concentrate on Pinterest which I find to be super inspiring and I spend a lot of time there just looking at great ideas and beautiful things. My following on Pinterest is growing and I hope to continue in that direction. I didn’t quite understand the interest in using Pinterest at the beginning but boy has my opinion changed since then! I just love finding inspiration for colours, knits, crochet items, jewelry, and so forth. Endless daydreaming and inspiration for any crafter.

And then there is Google+, now I’m told it is important to be present on Google + so I just recently did something about that and I now actually share my blog posts on Google +. I’m curious, what is your favorite social media? Where do you connect with friends/family and other crafters? Do you think that it is important for a company to be present on ALL social media outlets or would you think it is better to just concentrate on 1-2 and do them to the fullest ?

And what about Youtube? I’m on Youtube a lot as a consumer of tv shows, films and of course how to videos of all sorts. I was wondering if you too used Youtube for crafting related purposes? Do you go there for tutorials? For podcasts? To learn something new? Do you have a favorite crafting channel or a favorite crafting youtuber? Something you would like to share with us in case we are not familiar with those? I would love to hear from you on the subject. So I thought, why not create my own Youtube channel, not necessarily to post videos of myself or my crafts but to sort of create a library of interesting crafting channels and how to videos and then share this with my followers. A channel that could be like a reference for you when you are looking for something knitting/crochet or fibre related. Well I did start but it is going to take quite some time to do this well so I’m not going to talk about this everywhere for the time being as I need to work a lot on this but I did want to tell you about it and you can check it out and any suggestions for this new Knitting in France Youtube channel are welcome. So check what I have got so far here

That is all for today folks, I have not done a lot of knitting this week so no pictures of in progress items. I do have a confession, I did RIP my socks out again!!! This must be like a limited curse on me these days and hopefully I’ll escape from it soooon! I ripped out the socks and cast on immediately so now I’m doing them 2 in 1 style and of course so far so good:) Cross my fingers and hopefully I’ll be able to share a picture of these future socks soon.

Until next time, take care, enjoy your weekend and I hope you will have the time to do lots of knitting/crochet/spinning or any other craft you enjoy πŸ™‚

  1. Oh my, LOVE pinterest and probably spend waaaay to much time there! 😍 Anyway, social media is such a bear. I too started out with FB but I’ve found it extremely annoying to keep up with all the changes. I use Twitter for conversations and asking questions that come to mind. Generally can get answers pretty quick. I’ve read that you should pick 2-3 top social media platforms to use so that you don’t get burned out. Have I followed that advice…well I’m working on it. Probably my top right now are pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. Although I just make a prefunctory post to FB as I have new posts.
It was good to read your opinion from the viewpoint of a fellow knitter. I would be interested in talking about the results of your exploration in a few months–see how it affects your traffic etc. Thanks for the great post!

  2. I agree with picking 2-3 tops as you will have more content overall and that better than doing them all and it being pretty sparse entirely. I of course love LOVE Pinterest as well. I have a few boards for business but its great for personal inspiration too so its great. I’m actually loving Tumblr! There is a big craft community there and it has been fun . with me I have my blog, Tumblr, facebook, google + which I Mainly use. I do also have a twitter account though I’m not proficient at it. I take advantage of wordpress’s post linking though so all my blog posts get shared to twitter, google+, facebook, and Tumblr. Oh yeah, Instagram is on my phone so a lot of my random WIP pics I post there in addition to personal stuff. Social media can be overwhelming but its fun for me!
